"The Return of Buzz Lightyear” (part 1) By Dave Wallace for Comics Bulletin.com Toy Story #0 sees BOOM! Studios launch a regular ongoing title for the Pixar property. On the strength of this opener, it looks as though it’s going to be a little more enjoyable than the previous mini-series was. The book’s artwork, by Nathan Watson and colorist Mickey Clausen, suits the story well. It’s loose and cartoonish without ever veering too far from the familiar character designs of the movie, and it’s bold and colourful enough that it should encourage younger readers to sit up and take notice. There are one or two nods to specific moments from the movies (for example, Watson’s recreation of the shots from both Toy Story movies in which Woody and Buzz climb an object and look up to discover the identity of a new character), and there are some fairly subtle effects that serve important functions for the story. For example, I appreciated the way that the faded green of the original Buzz (in comparison to the brighter colours of the newcomer) indicates his age and a sense of wear and tear, whilst also serving the purpose of clearly distinguishing the two otherwise identical characters.
